Parental interference

“Don’t worry, honey. I’ll email your teacher and take care of it.”

This line, recurring among the parents of many LHS students seems to cause numerous problems among teachers and parents. Parents do not seem to understand that their children lose credibility amongst teachers when they do not take the initiative to address their problems on their own. These accusatory emails are demonstrating for the teachers their son or daughter’s dependence on them for everything that does not exactly go their way.

“We call them ‘Helicopter Parents.’ They seem to hover over their kids and refuse to let them fail,” Richard Brown, librarian, said. “Kids have every right to fail. Kids deserve the right to fail.”

In my opinion, the most valuable way for students to learn is through their own mistakes.

Isn’t the whole point of attending high school to prepare students for college? If this is true, parents who interfere in their children’s schoolwork are implying that they will also interfere when their son or daughter leaves for college – even afterwards! Parents can’t protect their children from failure for the rest of their lives, so why should it be different now?
