The 2013 school year is a quarter of the way over! Students and teachers alike have gotten back into the school groove over the past nine weeks. Both new and old clubs have kept life interesting for most, but it hasn’t always been easy. From not being able to carry our bags to class to being locked out of the bathrooms for days at a time, it’s been a struggle for the LHS student body.

Aug. and Sep. went by quickly and suddenly it was Homecoming. Perhaps the student body’s favorite week of the school year 2013’s Fall Homecoming celebrated old traditions while also introducing some new ones. Homecoming week kicked off literally with the first ever student-faculty kickball tournament in which the Class of 2014 came away victorious. Homecoming Day itself was a great time for all; fun activities kept students occupied all day long, Star Search was immensely entertaining and brought with it talents old and new. The football team came out on top against Ottawa and the day culminated with the ever popular Homecoming Dance.

Year after year, extracurricular clubs are among the highlights of being a student at LHS. 2013 brought with it several new clubs along with old favorites and one of the most popular is the brand new Letterman’s Club. Founded by Robert Ebenstein, social studies teacher, the club’s goal is for high achieving students and student athletes to have fun while also serving the community. Its first event was the student dodgeball tournament on Oct. 12.

Unfortunately, there have been some hiccups along the way. The new bag policy was a rude awakening for those students used to taking bags and purses to class because of it. The men’s restrooms have been locked several times due to repeated vandalism, much to the chagrin of those male students who use the restroom. Students, as they have in the past, have had to adapt to both the positive and negative changes.

Overall, the first quarter has gone well for everyone at LHS. Sports and activities like debate and volleyball have both performed exceptionally well. Students and teachers alike have gotten back into their regular routines. 2013 will surely go down as one of the most memorable years in school history.
