High School “Bucket List”

High school is an exciting stage of life. Especially as a senior, I have had time to reflect on all of the fun activities and events I have participated in throughout my “career” at LHS. Therefore, I have compiled a “Bucket List” of items that each and every student should do at least once while in high school.

  1. Attend a home football game at Wildcat Stadium:  There’s just nothing like high school football. The small-town atmosphere is one that simply can’t be beat. With almost the entire community packed into the stands, Friday nights are something I will always cherish. It’s obviously much different than college or professional football, but that doesn’t mean it’s less exciting. In high school you actually know the players, which allows you to have a more personal connection to the outcome of the game.
  2. Join a club:  There are over 15 different clubs and organizations students can be a part of. Not only does it look good on a résumé, but you will meet people from different grades and different backgrounds who all have something in common with you. It is within these organizations that you will find some of your best friends.
  3. Dress up for Spirit Week:  It may not be in everyone’s comfort zone, but it’s fun to let loose and make a fool of yourself two weeks (fall and winter) out of the year. Plus, that means it’s easier to pick out your clothes AND you earn class points!
  4. Be in Star Search:  This is one of the greatest homecoming activities ever. It’s so much fun to watch people dance, sing, play instruments, tell jokes or perform skits. Not only is it good entertainment, but it teaches you more about your fellow classmates. Being on stage, whether it’s by yourself or with a group, gives you an exciting adrenaline rush and creates memories that will last forever.
  5. Help with Hallway/Trophy Case Decorations:  It might be a little bit of a hassle, but helping with your class decorations can be a good bonding experience. You and your fellow classmates are all working together to reach a common goal. It’s fun!
  6. Enjoy Halftime:  Halftime is one of those things we often take for granted. We have the opportunity to just sit, snack on food, relax and socialize with our friends for 50 minutes of the day. This is one of those privileges that we will all miss once we leave. Therefore, stay on top of your grades and don’t get Friday Night Schools so you can enjoy this privilege while you’re here!
  7. Attend the LHS Musical:  These actors, actresses and musicians spend so much time rehearsing. It’s unbelievable how cool the final production is. Our classmates work hard and it’s important to support them. In addition to that, you will enjoy what is guaranteed to be a wonderful show!
  8. Go to at least 1 event for every sport:  Our school has many different sports teams:  Soccer, cross country, volleyball, football, basketball, wrestling, track, softball and baseball. Make sure you attend at least one game for each sport. You may find that you enjoy watching some of these sports more than you thought!
  9. Go to “The Lot”:  Since it is quite unusual that we hang out in our school parking lot, this is a tradition only us Louisburgians will understand. But, it’s actually a neat thing! It usually consists of hanging out, making Sonic runs and having a big dance party. “The Lot” is something I recommend to each student at LHS.
  10. Go to Prom:  If you talk to adults about high school, which is sometimes referred to as “the time of your life,” you will most likely hear them talk about Prom Night. It’s exciting to see how everyone can “clean up nicely” for this occasion. Even though your face might be sore from taking pictures, I promise it’s worth it. If you choose to, you can have a blast at both prom AND after prom. So, don’t let skipping prom be one of your regrets from high school.
  11. Build a rapport with at least 1 teacher who you will stay in touch with after graduation:  The teachers at our school are some of the best teachers in the world. I cannot tell you how many times they have helped me out and brightened my day. Even if you’re a person who “hates school,” surely you can find at least one teacher you connect with. In order to fully enjoy high school, forming relationships with your teachers is crucial. Teachers help you with so much more than just school work; they teach you lessons that will last a lifetime.
  12. Get to know your fellow classmates prior to the 2 weeks before graduation:  Every year someone mentions in their graduation speech that, “These last two weeks have been amazing. We finally put the labels aside and came together as one big family.” Well, I’m telling you right now—don’t wait until the end of your senior year to make that happen. Don’t even wait until the beginning of senior year. Start NOW. I realize it’s unrealistic to get along with every single person in your class, but you’re only with these people for four (or less) more years. Don’t waste time hating each other when you could be making memories together.

No matter how bad you think school “sucks,” try your best to have a positive outlook. Make the most of your high school days because once you graduate, you can’t get them back.
